Don't see a question that you have? Contact us!
I have never played an instrument before- can i still join one of the instrumental ensembles?
YES! We are fortunate to offer both continuing and introductory ensemble classes here at PCIS. If you have specific questions regarding availability or placement, please contact one of the directors.
Do you recieve a grade in the ensemble classes?
Yes- Grades are not based on ability, but instead are based on effort and growth. Because students perform at various levels, the grading reflects the individuals effort in class and at performances.
Do i have to be a strong musician to participate in the music program?
No- Our middle school ensembles are made up of musicians of all levels. The PCIS music directors pride ourselves on our ability to challenge advanced musicians while still being able to build the skills and techniques of our beginner musicians- and everyone in between!
Does it cost any money to be apart of the music program?
No- There is no membership or participation fee. The only costs that students are responsible for are festival audition fees, and field trip transportation fees.
are students required to attend afterschool performances?
Yes- For our continuing students, participation in performances afterschool is required. Generally, there are between 3 and 4 performances a year that take place in the afternoon or evening. If you are unable to attend a performance due to a conflict, please check the Performing Arts Handbook regarding excused absences and how missing a performance can affect your class grade.
what can I do to prepare to study music at the middle school level?
If you are brand new to instrumental music, it is highly recommended that students look at the PPS Summer Music Program above in the navigation bar.

Our exploratory program is offered for just that- exploring concert band and orchestra instrument options. These  include: flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone, percussion (drums), violin, viola, and cello. This program will introduce students to the various instruments offered in our schools and will prepare them to study instrumental music once the school year begins.

If you have some experience studying instrumental music, the PPS Summer Music Program offers concert band and orchestra weeks. These programs are a great way to prepare for the upcoming school year.
what if I don't own my own instrument but would like to be apart of one of the instrumental ensembles?
While P.C.I.S. has a small loaner library of used instruments that are leant out to musicians each year, we encourage you to explore rental or purchase options. Reach out to the music department for more information.
